The
Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps won the 2013 Chika
Chukwumerije Sports Foundation International Taekwondo Open, which ended
on Saturday.
The two-day championship had over 300 taekwondoists from eight countries competing for the N2.8m prize money.
NSCDC won three gold medals ahead of
Niger Republic, who had two. Kano and Zamfara states, as well as the
Nigerian Police Force, had a gold each.
Sunday Onofe (-80kg), Chiamaka Onumonu
(+67kg) and Chinazum Nwosu (-57kg) won the gold medals for NSCDC while
Niger’s Abdoulrasak Alfaga (+80kg) and Garba Ismael (-68kg) claimed the
two gold medals for their country.
Speaking after his win over Oyo’s
Chukwudi Nzelu in the men’s -80kg, NSCDC’s Onofe said, “I am happy to
retain my title. My final opponent is an experienced fighter but I
didn’t allow him space to hit me and this gave me an edge over him.”
The Director-General, National Sports
Commission, Gbenga Elegbeleye, lauded the organisers of the tournament,
assuring that the NSC would continue to support CCSF programmes.
Chika Chukwumerije, founder of CCSF,
promised that the next edition would be bigger, adding that plans were
on to enlarge the competition.
